The first step is to modify the carter.
As delivered in the kit it needs to be
cleaned and the surface must be
made smooth. Because it is a casted
piece and then machined, you should
get rid of the machining marks.
I first made the curve smooth and after
that I sand blasted the whole part.
On the photo left you can see the steel
part of the engine block.
Above not cleaned, below sandblasted
Looking at the cylinder head , I was at
first surprised that there was no head cover
in the kit. After contact with ACA it is one
piece. So made a stripe with a sharp tool
to make it look as if there is a head cover.
Next to that I applied the so called swirl effect
to make it look more like a Bugatti engine.

More info about swirl or originally called
"handscraping" go to

The basic engine parts cleaned an put together.
Now going on to the next step assemble all
the separate parts to the engine.
At first I will check if all the holes are drilled
to the right depth and if I have to tap the thread for the different screws nuts etc.
Now we know what all the bolds and nuts are, we will start to put everything together.
On the left picture you see the main parts in the right place. For the next steps we will talk
about front side, intake side, exhaust side etc.
So be sure you have all parts in the right direction.
ATTENTION
Working with such small bolds and screws asks for gentle attention. Do not use to much force when tightened. First check if there is thread at the point were you want to put your screw. To be sure take a tap and make the thread. When the hole is not deep enough take a drill that is at least 2 points smaller then the tap .
Example : for a 1mm tap use a 0,8 mm drill !
On the photo above you can see the
rough surface and as the circle shows
a bad spot that has not the right curve.
On the right photo you can see that the
curve is smooth.
The rest of the surface is sandblasted.
The sandblasting is done with a simple
device operated with a vacuum cleaner.
I will use this sandblasting more often
in the progress of building this model.

please send E-mail.
Now we have ready the basic engine parts and made inventory of all nuts and bolds, we can start with all the parts that we have to mount on the engine. First we start with the carburetter. The original ( Solex )carburetter is casted in brass and then the surface is treated with a sort of mat chrome. So i want to have the same effect. I first cleaned the surface with a scotch bright sanding cloth to get a smooth surface. Then I spray painted the parts with an airbrush with a special paint to get the mat chrome effect. When the paint is almost dry you have to shine it up with a soft cloth.
During this proces it starts to get the mat chrome effect. See result on the right! I did it a little bit longer to get the old look effect. On some spots the brass shines through the paint.
To give the carburetter a realistic look I made a small stckter to show the brand SOLEX.
Now it looks like the real engine carburetter.

To put the parts together use the two bolts nr 9 from the above list. You have to make a 2mm thread

The paint I used is from :  Model Master
from the serie METALIZER   No. 1401
Cylinder head group

First assemble the cylinder head.
For the head cover I used other bolts yust to give it a more realistic look. Otherwise use the nr 3 small Bugatti bolts. For both the intake and exhaust side use the nr 2 pins. I just used a small hammer and drift. Use the same bolts for the water hose con-
nection parts.
